Most Significant Difference
- The Power button controls shut down and restart.
Students will only have access to the User button. Faculty and staff will be able to sign out with the User button and shut down or restart with the Power button.
Also, it's no longer "Log Off," it's "Sign Out."
The New Start Menu
The Start menu looks a bit different, but it has all the usual features — a list of all installed applications as well as power options for shutting down or restarting the PC. Move the mouse to any edge of the Start menu and to resize it. The TWU image only includes the Internet Explorer Application tile, but you may add tiles to the Start menu.
New Way to Locate X Drive
On Windows 10, click This PC.
Set Default Browser
By default, the browser will be Microsoft Edge. To change this setting (and other defaults):
- Right-click on the Start menu.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Default apps.
- Under Web browser, click Edge and select a browser. You may also have to select "Change Anyway."
- Close the window.
Where did ... go?
Many of the tools used frequently are now organized under Windows Accessories. Examples include Notepad, Snipping Tool, and Remote Desktop, to name a few.
Click to Search
The search bar no longer appears in the Start menu.
However, if you simply type in the application or file name, a search will begin.
Settings App vs. Control Panel
The Settings option in the Start menu takes to the new Settings app, which is evolved from the PC Settings app on Windows 8. This is designed to be a more user-friendly way to configure the computer.
However, it still doesn’t contain every setting. The old Windows Control Panel is still included. Some older settings may only be available in the Control Panel, while some newer settings may only be available in the Settings app. To quickly access the Control Panel and other advanced options, right-click the Start button or press Windows Key + X. This menu is a useful holdover from Windows 8.
Why do some things open in Edge?
Microsoft's new browser, Edge, is highly integrated in Windows 10. As much as possible, TWU Technology has minimized its appearance, but it may appear from time-to-time.
Other Changes
- Windows Explorer was renamed File Explorer and now has a ribbon — File Explorer offers many useful features.
- Mixed Reality Portal is new and can be completely ignored.
- The Store app is blocked and should be ignored (it cannot be removed, unfortunately.)
Good to Know
- Applications open slowly when run for the first time.
- Right-click the desktop to personalize it.
- The Office Suite is installed on TWU-supplied PCs, so there is no need to download and install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- If you click Get Help on the start menu, you will see a pop-up window with no information in it. This is a known issue.
- Applications and websites may be pinned to the taskbar by dragging the favicon in the web address bar or dragging the application icon from the start menu.
- Taskbar settings can be customized by right-clicking the taskbar.
- You may have to set up a default application to play sound files (e.g. voicemails). Follow these instructions to do so.
Despite all the changes, Windows 10 is much easier to get to grips with than Windows 8 was. It’s based on the familiar desktop interface, complete with a start menu and desktop windows.
