Moving a Canvas Quizzes Question Bank to a New Quizzes Item Bank

While Canvas permits migration of quizzes from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes, the question banks in Classic Quizzes cannot be directly migrated to the item banks in New Quizzes. This article presents a work around.

Get a List of Your Current Question Banks

The steps to follow:

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course and click Quizzes in the Canvas Course Navigation Menu
  2. Click the vertical ellipsis icon to the right of the +Quiz button and select Manage Question Banks.
  3. Make a list of the Course Question Banks that appear. Highlight the names of the Question Banks using your mouse. Copy and paste the information in a Google Doc or Word Document.

Create a Quiz in Classic Quizzes for Each Question Bank

The steps to follow:

  1. Return to Quizzes in your course.
  2. Click the +Quiz button at the top right of the page to add a quiz.
  3. When prompted, choose Classic Quizzes as the quiz engine.
  4. (Optional) If you previously chose New Quizzes and selected Remember my choice for this course, click Cancel to stop adding a quiz Click the vertical ellipsis icon next to the +Quiz button and select Reset quiz engine choice.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. Name the quiz with the same name as a Question Bank in your list. You may want to add QB to distinguish it from any other quizzes with the same name.
  7. To avoid adding the quiz to your grade book, select Practice Quiz as the Quiz Type.
  8. Click Save.
  9. At the top right of the quiz information page, click Edit.
  10. Select the Questions tab, click Find Questions.
  11. In the left panel of the Find Quiz Questions window, locate and click the question bank that matches the quiz you are creating.
  12. In the right side of the Find Quiz Questions window, click Select All to select all the questions in the bank.
  13. Click Add Questions.
  14. Click Save.

Add Questions from your Classic Quiz to a New Quizzes Item Bank

The steps to follow:

  1. Click on Settings in the course navigation menu.
  2. Choose Export Course Content from the menu at right.
  3. Select Quiz under Export Type.
  4. Click the check mark to the left of All Quizzes.
  5. Use the check box to select the quiz to export and click the Create Export button.
  6. After the export processes, click on the New Export link to download the file.
    • The download will typically go to your Downloads folder, but may go elsewhere depending on your device settings. If you use Chrome, a link to the file may also appear at the bottom of your browser window
  7. Choose Item Banks in your course navigation menu and then click the +Bank button.
  8. Name the new bank and click Create Bank.
  9. Click on the title of the new bank.
  10. Click the vertical ellipses at upper right of the page and choose Import Content.
  11. Click in the shaded box to navigate to the downloaded file.
  12. Click Import.

Migrate Your Quiz to New Quizzes

The steps to follow:

  1. Click Quizzes in the course menu.
  2. To the far right of the quiz you just created, click the vertical ellipsis icon and click Migrate. (Migration to New Quizzes may take a few minutes.)
