Windows 11 Transition — Overview & FAQs

Windows 11 Transition Overview

As part of our continued efforts to enhance security, performance, and meet state technology requirements, Microsoft Windows 11 will become the new standard operating system on all university-managed PCs.

The transition to Windows 11 is already underway in many departments and areas across campus — a change some of you may have already noticed. We’re sharing this update to ensure all faculty and staff are informed, especially those who may be working remotely or away from campus during the summer months.<

Windows 10 has served the university well, but its official support from Microsoft is ending soon. To ensure continued access to critical security updates, application support, and efficient device management, upgrading to Windows 11 is essential. This upgrade positions TWU to meet future technology demands while maintaining a secure and reliable computing environment for all faculty and staff.

Mac Users: You will not be affected by this Windows-specific change. However, we wanted to include you in this update to stay aligned with our broader campus technology initiatives.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Why are we moving to Windows 11 now? Microsoft has announced that support for Windows 10 will end Fall 2025. Transitioning early allows TWU to proactively align with compliance standards, avoid rushed upgrades later, and ensure compatibility with future software platforms.
  • Will my files and data be preserved during the upgrade? Yes. Most upgrades will preserve your personal files and settings. However, as a best practice, we strongly recommend backing up your files to OneDrive or a departmental network share prior to the upgrade.
  • Will I notice major differences between Windows 10 and Windows 11? The interface in Windows 11 has a more modern look, with a centered Start Menu and cleaner layout, but the functionality remains familiar. Most faculty and staff can expect a short adjustment period with minimal disruption.
  • Will all of my applications still work? Most university-approved applications are fully compatible with Windows 11. If you rely on any specialty or research-specific software, please reach out to your department’s IT support or the Technology Service Desk to confirm compatibility.
  • Is this mandatory? Can I opt out? Upgrading to a supported operating system is required under both state policy and university guidelines. Windows 11 will become the standard baseline for all university-managed PCs. If you have accessibility needs or unique circumstances, please contact the Technology Service Desk to discuss accommodations.
  • Who can I contact if I have questions or need help? Contact the Technology Service Desk at 940-898-3971, servicedesk@twu.edu, techchat.twu.edu, or submit a request through the Technology Service Catalog.
