What is a position code and how does it help me?

A position code is a sequence of numbers serving as a unique identifier for various positions in Oracle Cloud. Departments use position codes for many purposes, including:

  • Hiring
  • Reporting
  • Determining Vacancies

This report can also be used by departments to evaluate if a position code already exists for your hiring needs, or if one needs to be created. If you run the report and find there is not a position code for the type of role that you are seeking to hire for, the compensation team can assist you with creating one.

To create a position code, it is best to reach out to the compensation team via email. Email is checked frequently and having documentation for the request enables the team to provide faster support. The compensation team recommends that you include this information in your email:

  1. The employee type for the role (i.e., staff, faculty, graduate worker, student assistant, or temporary).
  2. Which department the position will fall under/report to.
  3. Include any approval forms that have been worked on, like a JAQ, a SAM, or a PAF.

Depending on the employee type, a single code can be assigned to several people. This is common with student, graduate worker, and temporary positions, which are all built in a way to accommodate multiple hires per code. The position codes for staff and faculty positions are usually one-to-one, meaning one code per employee.
