What is TWU’s position on telework?
We have aligned two state laws: SB 2615 (specific to higher education) and HB 5196 (covering all state agencies). These laws require us to limit telework based on institutional mission and legal allowances.
What is the expectation for working on campus?
Regular part-time and full-time faculty and staff are expected to work on campus.
Will faculty still be allowed to teach online?
Yes — if the course is designated as an approved distance education course or dual credit course through Academic Affairs and Faculty Senate per SB 2615.
Can faculty perform research remotely?
Yes — faculty with off-campus research assignments are exempt from the telework restriction under SB 2615.
Can staff continue telework?
Exceptions to work on campus in the form of full-time telework, hybrid, or part of a combined flexible schedule and telework may be granted on an occasional basis if the role allows it and they meet operational standards. All arrangements must be in written, annually renewable, revocable agreements.
What are the conditions for a staff employee to be considered for any form of telework?
Exceptions to full-time work on campus may be considered on an occasional basis if the staff employee:
- has demonstrated the ability to work well with minimal supervision.
- has a deep understanding of their duties and responsibilities.
- has demonstrated the ability to manage their time.
- has a record of thoroughly and efficiently accomplishing their duties; and
- is employed in a position that does not require their day-to-day physical presence or in-person interaction with students, administration, or other employees.
What is the process for staff employees to be considered for any form of telework that is not based on a medical condition?
The staff employee’s supervisor should first discuss the potential exception with the appropriate Academic Component Administrator, Dean, or Department Head. If the request meets the criteria and is supported, the Academic Component Administrator, Dean, or Department Head should then seek pre-approval from the Division Vice President.
Once pre-approval is granted, the employee may complete the Alternative Work Arrangement form and route it through the formal approval process. The Division Vice President and a second Vice President must approve the request.
What if I have a medical condition?
Faculty or Staff who require remote work due to medical needs should contact the Office of Human Resources for guidance from the Leave Coordinator, Rebecca Gardner (rgardner2@twu.edu), regarding an appropriate accommodation.
What happens during emergencies?
If the Chancellor or designee declares a catastrophic event, telework may be temporarily authorized University-wide, consistent with SB 2615.
What if I have additional questions?
Faculty telework questions should be directed to the appropriate Dean’s office. Staff telework questions should be directed to the Office of Human Resources.
