In order to follow proper data security, Texas Woman's University has redaction rules that should be followed whenever Social Security Number (SSN) or Date of Birth (DOB) must be redacted. Those rules are outlined here.

Note: the birth year is not for public distribution at any time according to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
SSN
For Social Security Number, the first five digits should be hidden, or masked. The dash (-) separator is not counted in the digit count.
Incorrect: 123-45-6789
Incorrect: 123-45-xxxx
Correct: xxx-xx-6789
DOB
For Date of Birth, the day of birth should be hidden or masked.
Incorrect: 11/22/3333
Incorrect: 11/22/xxxx
Correct: 11/xx/3333
Remember, if the data is for public distribution, then FERPA rules also apply and the birth year should be redacted.
