Outreach Activities

Outreach to underrepresented groups for all positions is a shared responsibility at the department level and the Office of Human Resources.

Please review the following Office of Human Resources outreach activities and examples (not exhaustive) of outreach activities to be conducted at the department level for each search.

HR Outreach Activities

the Office of Human Resources will engage in outreach efforts by posting position on several diversity websites through LocalJobNetwork.com. This service also distributes positions through email to a wide variety of community organizations committed to veterans, individuals with disabilities, women, universities and colleges, historically black university and colleges and other minority groups.

All Assistant Professor and Associate Professor positions are posted on Scholarly Hires, a higher education diversity job board.

Examples of Department Outreach Activities

  • Conduct direct recruitment efforts, orally and written to underrepresented minorities and females through professional associations, personal and professional networks and community organizations
  • Post positions on female and minority professional association websites and listservs
  • Reach out to female and minority colleagues in your professional area to recruit candidates
  • Encourage current employees to refer underrepresented minorities and females
  • Allow sufficient time, including an extension if necessary to recruit a diverse applicant pool
  • Expand the number of candidates to be included in the interview pool to increase the likelihood of including underrepresented employees
  • Design flyers, emails and letters to invite applicants. Send out in advance so that organizations have time to post and disseminate information to their members
  • Engage in the above outreach activities to Veterans and Individuals with Disabilities.

Documentation is key. ALWAYS document your efforts in the EEO Compliance Review Hiring Evaluation Checklist at the end of the hiring process.
